Frederic Mosa is one of the most sought after teachers and adjudicators in the WDSF Latin world, coaching top Latin couples. In his lecture at the Master Evolution Training Camp that you can find on Dancesportlife Academy, he is showing you with the help of Andrea Silvestri & Marina Varadi the importance of details in our art.
In Frederic’s vision, there are three important details that can completely change a couple for the better. These three components of dancing are crucial if you want to make your art memorable.
1. The signature move
The first thing that Frederic Mosa urges you to think about is how to make your dance unique. And one way of doing that is by trying to find your signature move.
Just think and imagine special things: unexpected movements or rhythms! You can create these signature movements by thinking about what you would like to produce, what emotions you want to show.
Many great couples, if not all of them, have one move in their routines that you can recognize as theirs. One of these couples is Andrea Silvestri & Marina Varadi. In Frederic’s lecture, they showcase how they change a simple step in rumba into their signature movement. You can see this movement at the Bucharest Grand Slam from last year, at 01:18.
2. The musicality
For the second component, Frederic demonstrates through some different pieces of music and with the help of Andrea Silvestri & Marina Varadi how different a dance can be if the couple has no musicality. 3. The connection in the partnership
The last, but certainly not the least detail: connection. Dancesport is based on the connection between partners. In the end, that is the beauty of this sport – the magic that happens when two people are dancing together as one.

How To Recover From An Injury?
In our podcast with Dr. Jerry Lynch, we have touched a quite sensitive subject for an athlete: injuries and how to recover from them.
Dr. Jerry Lynch is a coach, mentor, and teacher who guides and coaches athletes and parents to explore the meaning and purpose of sport. He has been recognized as one of the top five in his profession nationwide. He is the author of 13 books and amongst them is “Thinking Body, Dancing Mind”. In this article, you will discover some of the wisdom of Dr. Jerry Lynch shared with us in our podcast regarding how to recover from an injury.
Situation no 1: You just got injured
At some point in their career, dancers do get injured and some injuries are more serious than the others.
Injury equals an inability to execute the movements in a correct manner or even at all (depending on how serious the injury is). When we cannot dance we get frustrated and disappointed, even angry or depressed. You get worried that maybe you will never recover or it will take too much time.
Dr. Jerry Lynch’s first advice is to quiet your mind of the negative thoughts. When you fill your mind with worries, your body becomes tense and it blocks the arterial pathway, thus the blood cannot get to the area that needs to be healed.
He also tells us that in order to achieve muscular relaxation, he puts the athlete on a program: meditation, visualization, and affirmation.
Meditation allows you to clear your mind of all the negative thoughts.
Visualization happens during the process of meditation. During this stage, you can start to visualize the healing process. Feel how your muscle, now deep red becomes step by step pink – its normal color. From here, imagine how the muscle feels how it supposed to feel and that you are up and running again.
Affirmation is the last stage. You fill your mind with positive thoughts and encouragement. Those affirmations create chemical reactions in your brain allow that part of the body to recuperate.
Situation no 2: You are scared not to get injured
After you get recovered, there is another problem that you have to deal with: you keep thinking that this could happen again. This makes you nervous, tight and tense, which will set you up for injury again. The very process of holding back is setting your body up for another injury.
In this case, Dr. Jerry Lynch advises you to visualize all your favorite performances. Think of your favorite show, competition or even practice and feel that performance. Then, when you go out on the dance floor, have an affirmation. For example, say to yourself: “I am going all out” or “I am stronger than I have ever been”.
Why are affirmations so important you might ask yourself? Well, there is a simple equation for that:
Using positive words to describe yourself and your dancing will create positive thoughts. These positive thoughts will give you good energy, a great feeling. It is from this good energy that your performance will come.

How Is Coronavirus Affecting The Dancesport World?
What is Coronavirus – COVID-19?
Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.
Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death.

How to stay safe from Coronavirus?
The World Health Organization urges us to follow these rules:
1. Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. This will help kill the viruses that may be on your hands.
2. Maintain at least 1 meter (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing. When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain the virus.
3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth.
4. Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.
5. If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early. National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent the spread of viruses and other infections.
How can dancers stay safe?
Taking into consideration the pieces of advice from the World Health Organization, we should limit the interaction with other people. But how can we do that? Dancing is based on interaction and it’s our life!
The most responsible thing to do in order to help at the eradication of this virus is to stay at home as much as possible. You can still try and practice in your home if you have enough space. If, you don’t have much space you can focus on micro-movements.
Furthermore, you can shift your attention towards self-education by watching videos of your favorite dancers on YouTube or study from the online courses and camp lectures that we have on Dancesportlife Academy.

How is Coronavirus affecting the dancesport world?
The spread of COVID-19 – Coronavirus – developed into a pandemic, which means that the epidemy has spread all over the world. This has laid a veil of sadness and panic over us all.
Many governments all around the world have banned gatherings of more than 1000, 100 and even 50, which obviously had an impact on the arts and sports fields. For example, in the United States, the NBA canceled all the events and the Champions League is suspended. Furthermore, many presidents have declared a national emergency over the coronavirus pandemic.
Dancesport events are not excluded from the measures and both dance federations – WDSF & WDC – are starting to announce cancelations of important events. Postponing or canceling the events are decisions made by the local organizers, based on recommendations and measures taken by their national governments.
What events are canceled?
The WDSF is already trying to identify potential dates for the 2nd half of the year to postpone the Grand Slam and Title events. Recent changes in the WDSF Competition Calendar are:
- WDSF GrandSlam and WDSF Open in Bucharest (ROM) on March 28-29th
- WDSF European Youth Latin Championship, WDSF International Open, and WDSF Open in Marseilles, (FRA) on April 4th
- WDSF World Open NS and WDSF Open, in Moscow (RUS) on April 4th-5th. (These will be re-scheduled to take place in Sochi on June 24-27, 2020).

The WDC is also showing responsible conduct by canceling events and the President of the council – Donnie Burns MBE – shared a visibly emotional message to the dancing world.
Some of the events that are canceled are:
- Prague Dance Championship. The new competition date is set to 24.10.2020
- FIDA ITALIA had to withdraw from the upcoming WDC AL European Formation Championship in Stoke on Trent due to the Coronavirus measures that have been put in place in Italy. Unfortunately, Mr. Mauro D Ambrossi will also be unable to adjudicate the event.
- The Polish Cup scheduled on the 28th of March is also postponed
- Romanian Open Superstars that was on the 29th March
