– «Keep your balance!» – that phrase I had to listen to every other day for almost a year. And I could not understand why I left the path in some figures of the English waltz. The answer came when we examined in detail the video of the last tournament and then corrected the errors.

The key was very easy: arms and head!

The head is the heaviest part of our body. Who saw at least once the racing cars (Formula 1 or Formula 3000), surely have noticed that pilots, when entering a curve, especially if that is fast, tilt the head inward. They are forced to do so, otherwise they could injure the neck, because the centrifugal force simply throws the head out, opposite to the turn.

Or the paratroopers. It is enough that they make a slight movement of head so that immediately they begin to go around. The same happens in the dance. If we keep the chin on the line of the support foot and balance with the free foot, half of the balance is guaranteed.

The arms however, the perfect balance is not achieved only with the head. It is also necessary to keep the arms in correct position. And more specifically, the elbows. Try to travel by public transport at rush hour. If it is placed perpendicular to the bar and its elbow is parallel to its body, it will fall with the first abrupt braking. On the other hand, if you stand facing the bar and your elbow is in front of you, more or less below the chin, however serpentine the path, you will remain standing.

Your body and your arms should create a certain volume. And whatever he does, he must not move only the body, or the legs, or the arms, but he has to move all that volume, then his dance will be stable. But, and how do I move my partner’s place ?, he will ask me. In curves, any road has an inward inclination. Without that inclination, at a certain speed the car will simply go to the curb outside under the effect of horizontal centrifugal force.

Where does the energy of arm movement come from? Right, from the ground. However, it is very difficult to transmit that force horizontally. So you should tilt the body a little towards the side of the support foot, and then you will get the strength to move your partner.
